5 5 Role of the Trainer The trainer’s primary role is to become a subject matter expert on the standardized administration of the OCAN tool Trainers are leaders within their HSP/LHIN and may have opportunities to share OCAN information with their HSP’s stakeholders: –Consumers –Staff –Regional partners –LHIN representatives

8 8 The Adult Educator We know that: Adults bring their work and life experience into the session Prior knowledge and experience related to the education session will be the starting point of instruction How do we encourage learners to relate assessment knowledge to OCAN education sessions?

9 9 The Adult Learner Principles of Adult Education: –Adults are motivated to learn intrinsically & extrinsically –Adults learn best when they are engaged as active participants in the learning process –Not all adults learn the same way –Adults learn more effectively when given timely and appropriate feedback

10 10 The Adult Learner Activity Let’s reflect: Consider a situation where you were a successful learner What were you learning about? What was it about the experience that made it work for you? Were there any challenges to your learning that you needed to overcome?

12 12 Motivating Adult Learners Your colleagues will probably ask themselves the following questions: What’s in it for me? Why do I need this information? How will I benefit from it? How can I make use of it in a practical, real way? How will it help me enhance my practice?
