Characterization cont. A.Direct—writer makes direct statements about the character. B. Indirect—writer reveals characters by the character’s behavior or what others say about him/her. 15

Character cont. A. Flat—characters reveal only one personality trait B. Round—characters who show varied and sometimes contradictory traits C. Static—character remains same throughout story D. Dynamic—character changes during the story 17

X. Foreshadowing the use of clues by the author to prepare readers for events that will happen in a story. 18

XI. Flashback a narrative technique that allows a writer to present past events during current events, in order to provide background for the current narration. By giving material that occurred prior to the present event, the writer provides the reader with insight into a character's motivation and or background to a conflict. 19

XII. Symbol Any object, person, place or experience that means more than what it is. (Stands for something else). 20.
