1 Figures of Speech Simile, metaphor, personfiication, Hyperbole, and irony

2 Simile A comparison of two things using the words “like” or “as”. Example: Her hair is as black as night.

3 Metaphor A comparison without the use of like or as Example: Her tiger eyes glowered in the night.

4 Personification Giving human qualities to non-human things. Example: The leaves danced in the wind.

5 Hyperbole An exaggerated statement used to heighten effect. It is not used to mislead the reader, but to emphasize a point. Example: She’s said so on several million occasions.

6 Irony 3 kinds of irony: 1. verbal irony is when an author says one thing and means something else. 2. dramatic irony is when an audience perceives something that a character in the literature does not know. 3. irony of situation is a discrepancy between the expected result and actual results.
