1 O-lan the German Shepherd By Kayla Marcinkevicz

2 O-lanShepherds  She took care of her family and begged in the streets so they could afford food.  She disliked Lotus and didn’t speak with her.  She was loyal to Wang Lung and had enough courage to stand up to the burglars in her house in order to keep their furniture.  When her son was being punished by her husband, she stood in the way and was beaten in his place.  They like to spend time with their families and as all dogs do, they beg for food.  Like O-lan, they are cautious around strangers.  Owners love them for their loyalty and courage.  They have an instinct to protect their owners.

3 Symbols  German Shepherds are a symbol of O-lan because they too live their lives in a selfless way. They do not care whether they are rich or poor. All they want is to be helpful and have a desire to be loved and appreciated.

4 O-lanShepherds  She remained quiet for the most part, but when she had something important to say, she spoke her mind.  She did not ask for much, she just wanted a family and a place to live peacefully.  She was devoted to her family and worked hard to give them a happy life.  She was not a weak woman, she had strength.  She worked long hours on the fields and rarely complained.  She had many children, 5 that is.  They bark when they need to, for instance, when they are acting as watch dogs.  They are content with company, food, and shelter. They do not mind where they live, all they want is a family.  They obey and try to please their masters and provide friendship and comfort to them.  They have strong bodies and muscles.  Their ancestors were herders and sheepdogs.  They also have many children about 7 to 8 puppies in a litter.
