Objectives To provide background regarding NIH’s Public Access Policy To discuss UAMS Librarians’ involvement in the pilot project and how other librarians can become involved To provide information on how researchers can become compliant To share information on NIH’s Enforcement of the policy.

The Law All articles resulting from any NIH funded (directly or indirectly) projects (in part or whole) must be made available in PMC within 12 months of publication in a peer-reviewed journal

Important Dates 2005 – Policy Established April 7, 2008 – Policy Became Mandatory January 2010 – NIH sending reports back NIH funded grants active Oct. 2007 – to date NIH contracts signed April 7, 2008 - to date

Methods for Manuscript Submission A – Author publishes an article in an open access journal (auto deposit) B - Author requests that the publisher deposit article in PMC (fee-based) C - Author or designee deposits via NIHMSS D - Publisher deposits article in NIHMSS & author must approve/complete the process.

Clarifications from NIH If journal is embargoed, can it still go in MSS? What to do about researchers no longer at institution? If publisher auto-submits, will PMC ID number be automatically sent to PI? Do articles have to be indexed in MEDLINE to be accepted in PMC?

Helping Your Researchers What Can You Do? Provide customized reports on compliance Provide them with form letter (for publishers) customized for your institution Provide presentations in their units / depts. Encourage them to start the conversation w/ subgrant awardees

Important Tips Authors must retain right to submit to PMC when signing copyright agreement Authors should start submission process upon acceptance for publication 3 months after publication date – shows up on non- compliant list Embargo date can be set by author
