"Writing for Researchers" Monday, July 31 - 2006 1:35-3:45PM. Laurence R Weatherley– Spahr Professor of Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, The University of Kansas Editor – The Chemical Engineering Journal
2
Writing for Researchers Scope of talk – Why publish? – Where to publish? – The Chemical Engineering Journal – the publishing process
3
Writing for Researchers Why publish? – Dissemination of knowledge – Open discussion and debate with others in the field – An excellent way of developing your personal research – Tenure and promotion
4
Writing for Researchers Scope of talk – Why publish? – Where to publish? – The Chemical Engineering Journal – the publishing process
5
Writing for Researchers Advice – Where to publish? – Read the aims and scope of selected journals and determine if your research fits – Read any further information about the topics which the editor is looking for and determine if your research fits – Look at the Editorial Board – What is the impact factor? – Review recent issues
6
Writing for Researchers Advice – Where to publish? – Look at the Editorial Board – this will give you a flavor of the international profile and status of the journal
7
Writing for Researchers Advice – Where to publish? – Look at the impact factor The Chemical Engineering Journal Impact factor: 2002 2003 2004 2005 0.671 0.992 1.383 2.034 2005 impact factor for AIChEJ; 2.036, Chem Eng Sci; 1.735 and Ind Eng Chem; 1.504
8
Writing for Researchers Advice – Where to publish? – Look at the impact factor In simple terms the Impact Factor is calculated according to the number of times published articles in the journal are cited
9
Writing for Researchers Advice – Where to publish? – Look at recent issues of the journal See if the subject matter and level of scientific quality matches with your own requirements Look at the schools from which the articles derive
10
Writing for Researchers Scope of talk – Why publish? – Where to publish? – The Chemical Engineering Journal
11
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Aims and Scope – Preparation of manuscripts – Submission – The review process – Responding to reviews and resubmission – Acceptance and publication
12
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Aims and Scope The Chemical Engineering Journal provides an international forum for the presentation of original research, interpretative reviews and discussion of new developments in chemical engineering. Papers which describe novel theory and its application to practice are welcome, as are those which illustrate the transfer of techniques from other disciplines. Reports of carefully executed experimental work, which is soundly interpreted are also welcome.
13
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Within the Chemical Engineering Journal, the Environmental Chemical Engineering section presents papers dealing with topics in environmental chemical and process engineering. Treatment processes, environmental process control and measurement and clean process technology are covered, and papers in which knowledge from other disciplines is integrated with chemical engineering are especially welcome.
14
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Within the Chemical Engineering Journal, the Chemical Reaction Engineering section presents papers on a wide range of topics including reaction kinetics, applied catalysis, simulation and optimization of different types of reactors, unsteady-state reactors, multiphase reactors, and fundamental investigations of the processes of heat, mass and momentum transfer that take place along with chemical reaction. Research works addressing critical areas of reactor engineering (e.g., reactor materials, control strategies, reactor safety and environmental issues), and emerging reactor technologies (e.g., membrane reactors, chromatographic reactors, unconventional fluidized beds, electrochemical reactors, micro-reactors, etc.) are particularly welcome.
15
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Aims and Scope – Preparation of manuscripts – Submission – The review process – Responding to reviews and resubmission – Acceptance and publication
16
Writing for Researchers Preparation of manuscripts – All electronic – WORD and PDF – Follow the Guide for Authors Abstract and Title – very important Don’t forget key words Font size ( body text, diagrams, tables and labels) Referencing format Experimental account – important to provide detail Minimize use of color if possible Conclusions – very important
17
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Aims and Scope – Preparation of manuscripts – Submission – The review process – Responding to reviews and resubmission – Acceptance and publication
18
Writing for Researchers Submission Proof read and check english before submission 100% on-line submission Submit manuscript including all figures and diagrams Submit covering letter Submit suggestions for reviewers – including name, address, e-mail
19
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Aims and Scope – Preparation of manuscripts – Submission – The review process – Responding to reviews and resubmission – Acceptance and publication – Rejection
20
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – The review process Paper is read by the editor and checked for overall relevance, quality, and format Paper sent for full peer review to at least two reviewers Reviewer feedback is in two parts – For the editor – For the authors Review process for CEJ can take up to 5-6 months – normally about 2 months
21
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Aims and Scope – Preparation of manuscripts – Submission – The review process – Responding to reviews and resubmission – Acceptance and publication – Rejection
22
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Responding to reviews and resubmission Four possible outcomes to the review – Accept without modification – rare – Invitation to resubmit with minor revisions – Invitation to resubmit with major revisions – Reject (based on quality of the paper or because the paper is outside the scope of the journal)
23
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Responding to reviews and resubmission Resubmission – Address the points raised by the reviewers – feel free to repudiate if you think you are right! – Resubmit two versions of the manuscript – one which is annotated with the changes – Submit a letter explaining how you have addressed the points raised by the reviewers Re-reviewing – Resubmission may be re-reviewed at the Editor’s discretion
24
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Aims and Scope – Preparation of manuscripts – Submission – The review process – Responding to reviews and resubmission – Acceptance and publication – Rejection
25
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Acceptance and Publication E-mail notification from the editor Proof receipt and checking - author publisher Copyright designations from the publisher Publication and dispatch of paper proofs Start to finish process can take between 4-18 months – average for the Chemical Engineering Journal is approximately 10 months
26
Writing for Researchers The Chemical Engineering Journal – Rejection Analyze the reasons Be prepared to go back and obtain more data Try another journal Discuss with your co-authors
