2. Monday, November 23, 2009 Objectives: Students will examine the issues of power, identity, and space by evaluating issues of racism in Baltimore’s public housing and the impact of colonial Africa. Opener: What do you know about the history of Africa? If nothing, how many African countries can you name? Activities: 1)Complete opener. Copy homework. 2)Quiz review for Wednesday (5 minutes) 3)Complete Baltimore Public Housing Activity 4)Examine Africa and Colonialism Homework: Study for quiz on Wednesday (see quiz review sheet).

Quiz Review Reasons for Hunger in World – 1)Inability to pay for food (enough is produced, if you have enough money then you aren’t hungry) 2)Traditional inequalities (i.e., between men and women) 3)Inadequate distribution systems (can’t get it to those who need it) 4) Greed and waste by developed countries Definitions of Latitude and Longitude – 1)Latitude: lines that run north/south on a map, measure distance east/west, center is 0 degrees latitude –the prime meridian 2)Longitude: lines that run east/west on a map, measure distance north/south, center is 0 degrees longitude – the equator EVERYTHING ELSE IS IN YOUR NOTES – COACH CLASS THIS AFTERNOON IN ROOM 215 UNTIL 4:00

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 Objectives: Students will be able to analyze the relationship between power, space and identity by evaluating segregation in Baltimore’s public housing and colonialism in Africa. Opener: What can we tell about power, identity and space from our investigation into public housing in Baltimore? Activities: 1.Complete Opener. Copy Homework. 2. Quiz Review 3.Complete handout on Segregation. Turn in. 4.Start work on Africa and Colonialism. Don’t keep handout packet, but keep your work. Homework: Study for the test. Also, bring all of your work for this class – tomorrow you will turn in the openers from last week and this week, and the homeworks from 11/17 (why is Baltimore segregated, etc.) and 11/18 (your interviews on segregation).

Quiz Review Continued Low Class world wide: 50% of the world makes only $0 - $1000 a year Middle Class world wide: 35% of the world makes $1000 – $12,000 a year High Class world wide: 15% of the world makes over $12,000 a year Things that can cause people to lower a class: Natural disasters that take away farm land, illnesses with little or no health care available, loss of an income from a family member or loss of job, corruption from government officials who take away land or work Things that can cause people to raise a class: Help from a non-profit to raise crops effectively, obtaining a better paying job, getting decent health care, fleeing war and resettling in a safer location, a good crop because of decent weather, help from relatives

6. Wednesday, November 25, 2009 Objectives: Students will demonstrate knowledge of the introduction to human geography by taking a quiz. Opener: None. Activities: 1)Take Quiz. Turn in. 2)Finish segregation in Baltimore. Turn in. 3)Turn in all openers and homeworks from 11/17 and 11/18 stapled together as a packet. Period 8/9 only turns in the work from 11/18. Make sure everything is properly labeled and your name is on all papers. 4)Start Homework. Homework: Read the introduction to genocide in Rwanda and answer the questions.
