1.7 Forcefield Analysis
2
Lewin’s force field Analysis
Kurt Lewin developed his framework for assessing the forces that influence change Can be used to decide whether a change should happen Or…… to help identify strategies in order to implement a change
3
Key terms…. Driving Forces…. Forces which will help the organisation reach it’s goal Restraining Forces… Forces which could prevent the organisation from making a change
4
An IB Example……
5
The Stages of Lewin’s Force Field Analysis
Identify the goal (desired change) Brainstorm and list the restraining forces and driving forces in the appropriate columns Allocate a weight to each of these forces, from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong). Show the relative effect of each force by a number next to it. Total up the scores
6
FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS MODEL
7
Task ….. In Pairs 10 minutes Hypothetical Scenario…… ‘BSM want to open a new school in a different area of Manila’ Create a force field diagram to show the driving and restraining forces In 10 mins each group will present their diagrams
8
Questions…. What does your diagram show?
How could the management at BSM use this diagram? What are the limitations of the forcefield analysis?
9
Disadvantages of Using the Force Field Analysis
Weightings attached to the forces may be subjective rather than referring to facts or evidence. Not all relevant forces may be considered, perhaps to deliberately over-emphasize the need for change.

Task…..IB Question 10 mins Answer the 6 mark question on Berkeley
Note….. You do not have to draw a diagram, but you can if you want
