Things to Know About Mrs. Wintring’s First Grade Class! Kyrene de la Mariposa 2013-2014
2
Meet Mrs. Wintring Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! I am so excited to start my third year at Mariposa in first grade. Originally from upstate New York, I moved to Tempe, Arizona in 2000 where I received my Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction in Elementary Education from A.S.U. My first three years of teaching I taught second grade at the Murphy School district in Phoenix and then taught first grade and 1/2 multiage at Kyrene del Milenio for three more years. In 2006 I had my daughter Cora and decided to stay home with her. My husband Cliff, Cora and I then moved to Flagstaff, AZ and in 2008 my son Jacob was born. After four years we moved back to Phoenix and I resumed teaching and taught first grade at Mariposa the last two years. Other than teaching you can find me mountain biking, hiking, swimming with my kids, and enjoying South Mountain. I look forward to getting to know all of our new first graders!

Homework Procedures Homework: Weekly Homework-Sent home on Friday. All homework is due the following Friday. Reading Homework: 15 minutes of reading at least 4 nights a week. Reading Bags: Your child will receive a reading bag with the book that they read that day along with a reading log. Have your child answer the question assigned and initial at the top that your child read. I will let you know via email/newsletter when we will be starting reading groups. Red Take-Home folders: Please check your child’s take-home folder every night, sign the behavior chart, and read!
23
Developing Good Homework Habits -Designate a place in the house that is quiet and will allow the child to focus. -Assign an amount of time for homework each night, instead of doing it all at once. -Use a timer if child has trouble staying focused. -Help children with directions and guide them when they have trouble. Giving them the answers doesn’t help them. -If the child gets frustrated because it is too difficult, please return it with a note and I will go over it again with the student. Or email/call me with any questions. -Put responsibility on the child to remember when their homework is due and to return it on time and completed. -“I accept complete, personal best homework only”
