2
Shell Exploration & Production WITSML is all about DATA Moving Data – Effortlessly – Efficiently – Securely – Preserving Vendor Neutrality
3
Shell Exploration & Production WITSML as enabler for real time dataflows Real Time Operations Centres (RTOCs) at the heart of Shell’s Wells business RTOCs use both WITS and WITSML WITSML used for smooth transfer of data into subsurface environment (Openworks) and soon wells environment (Openwells) More opportunities exist for leveraging WITSML

Shell Exploration & Production Recap October 2007: Where could we be in the near future (1) Most value is created early in the well lifecycle, there’s a need to support well planning and design activities with relevant high quality data – Relevant offset well data can be pulled in from any system, internal or external – Real time offset well data is plotted against models and can be reviewed for model optimisation – Advanced engineering work is supported by easy data exchange between generic and specialist well engineering applications – Collaborative effort of geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists, reservoir engineers, well engineers, and real time application engineers
5
Shell Exploration & Production Recap October 2007: Where could we be in the near future (2) Combining expertise leads to optimal delivery of the well – Staff on the rig - Wellsite engineer, Wellsite geologist, Drilling supervisor, Mudlogger, Directional driller etc. – can easily share data and have more time to focus on the job – Technical specialists from the office can be intimately involved in the execution of the well, they are fed information from all parties on the rig, and provide advice or intervene when needed – Reduction of POB can be achieved thus decreasing safety exposure and costs
6
Shell Exploration & Production Current Example: Exploration Well Using WITSML in RTOC facility to stream log data into Openworks Immediate visualisation of log data as it is being loaded Enables remote experts to be involved in monitoring well as it progresses and intervene when necessary
7
Shell Exploration & Production Recap October 2007: Where could we be in the near future (3) Success of the project and well is shared success for the partners – Collaboration between partners of a project is facilitated by timely and quality exchange of data without restriction on how that data is used or interpreted – The non operating partner can use its solution of choice to interpret the data since it’s based on an open industry standard – Daily operations reports, mudlog reports, casing reports etc. can be shared easily for import and interpretation
8
Shell Exploration & Production WITSML lessons learned WITSML is delivering value today Embed WITSML as part of your real time data architecture More opportunities exist for using WITSML to get the right data to the right person Real time validation and optimisation of models to improve drilling performance Reduce reporting burden and improve reporting quality Focus on most valuable information needs for the project /well being drilled and determine how WITSML can be an enabler Demonstrate value from WITSML and expand usage
9
Shell Exploration & Production Challenges and reality check - updated Global standard architecture requires WITSML enabled/certified software solutions Technical staff involved in realising real time connections need to learn (more) about WITSML Stricter compliance required for WITSML standard interpretation, improve uniformity of WITSML implementation in solutions Sharing concrete learnings from WITSML usage in this community can help accelerate uptake
