.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Because I wanted to take this course and it happened to be DL. I am interested in anthropology and know that the course instructor is a good teacher. I wanted to review and study the SAT and make sure I got the best score possible. The course wasn't offered by a teacher in our school. I really enjoy biology and wanted to take the course. I enjoyed the first class I took in DL. It was the only way I could continue taking French during high school. I'm very interested in technology. I wanted the experience of having taken a DL course. I thought it would help to interact with kids from other schools and was a great new experience. Interested in learning about ad psych and getting the opportunity to interact with students from other schools. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I like how we can get to know new people and learn with them every day. It helps to see a different point of view. I liked the variety of opinions from the different schools voicing all of their opinions together with ours. It was comfortable - easy to make up - videos and we got to work with kids from other schools. The teacher was beneficial and the activities helped me better understand the material. I got to meet other schools too. Our teacher was involved with all her sites…and that it was more discussion based rather than lecture based. Being able to learn…to get through the SATs. I liked that I could take a course that was not offered in my school. Section C

A new experience working with the advanced technology. An interesting and comfortable Learning environment. The opportunity to take a class not otherwise offered. The subject or course material. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ There was an echo sometimes that made it hard to hear the other schools. There were several days when we could not have class. The various problems that arose that sometimes made it difficult to have class…Echo. Slightly harder to get extra help. It is sometimes awkward to have a conversation with the teacher. You can't get help during study halls. Hosting class got more attention…the teacher didn't pay attention to us. I didn't like that we weren't able to meet the other students. I didn't like all of the noise and rude comments from the remote site. They were very disrespectful and distracting as well. It was hard to understand remote site. [They] often made it hard to learn with their many distractions. The different schools had to leave at different times and came in at different times. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Disruptive students or lack of discipline. Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as being disliked by DL students: Lack of extra help or lack of one-on-one with the teacher. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone/camera positioning. Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences.

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Make sure the system always works. Improved equipment dealing with sound microphones etc. Possibly have teachers go to remote sites more often. More student interaction and the teacher traveling to other schools. I would suggest that the teachers make more of an effort to communicate with remote sites. Make extra help time for the distant classroom because we can't go after class or after school if we have questions. I would say that they should make it so you can ask questions without everyone else hearing. Better times with class schedules with other schools Section C
21
.. More balanced attention to classes and better interaction. More discipline to deal with disruptive and disrespectful students.

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I was surprised at how well the teacher got to know us, and how much we were able to interact with one another. How easy it was to learn. How well you can hear the other schools. How nice everyone was. How well the class was able to function. How easy it is to hear everyone else. How clearly you could see the other schools. The easy operation of the equipment and the cooperation between schools. How well everything sounded and looked. How easy it was to learn things and how comfortable the environment was. The ability to live broadcast to three different schools. That the sound and learning capability is good. That the instructor could see and hear us so well and vice versa. The ability to have someone a long way away seem like they're in the same room. Section C

.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wish the teacher could have made our school and his more comfortable with each other. I only wish that he had favored both classes of students, but it is understandable that it can be hard to get to know the off site students on a personal basis. It was difficult at times to get her to recognize and answer our questions. Make extra help time for the distant classroom because we can't go after class or after school if we have questions. (Recognized that it is) …not as easy to learn when the teacher forgets that you are there. Visited more to have more contact with us. He could have used different learning activities to compensate for the limitations. Section C
26
.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Receive site students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Not ignore or pay less attention to the receive sites. Offer some opportunity for extra help. (Only 7% of the total number of responding students felt the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for the limitations of the network.)
27
.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ She came to visit each of the schools and arranged a get together. Our teacher came to our class to introduce himself in person. She went up to Keene and Warrensburg a few times. Also we met in Warrensburg so we could all meet each other. The teacher made great efforts to include the remote site in all activities and discussions. He composed the lessons to compensate for the time shifts between schools. He went out of his way to make sure we had the material. She went out of her way by giving us her home phone number and teaching to us anytime throughout the day. She gave us an email address for questions when we didn't have class. She would call and fax things and if the volume was out, would write on elmo. Section C
28
.. SAN Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most Frequently Recognized DL Teacher Efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate: Visited receive sites and promoted interaction between schools. Made e-mail and/or phone contact available. Provided extra help and review sessions. Made efforts to resolve technical issues. Used the technology to its best advantage.
