1 How did the colonies define our government? The first English colonies were businesses called ____________. When they went bankrupt the Crown forcefully took them over and called them __________. It made the colonists angry to lose all their freedom on how to run their colony, make money and now pay more taxes. The Puritans came for business reasons and for __________ freedom. However, they didn’t allow others the same freedom in their colony. The Northern and most Middle colonies disagreed with the Southern colonies over the issue of _________ and the right to own them. In fact, it was never really solved in the Constitution and eventually a Civil War was fought over the issue along with states rights vs. what the federal government wants.

9 RAT Create a set of notes in Cornell style from the reading using the RAT method (Read Around the Text): Step 1 – Know what the topic is. Write it as the headline. Step 2 – Turn the first red subtitle into a question. Write it in the left column. Step 3 – Look at maps, and pictures for hints to answer you question. Put those in the right column. Step 4 – Read the first sentences and last sentences of each paragraph to find other clues to the answer. Write those in the left column. Step 5- Answer the question in a complete summary paragraph using each of the reading’s paragraph’s main ideas, the maps ideas, and picture ideas as your resource. This is in the middle at the end of your notes.
