“Work Out Your Own Salvation” Philippians 2:12
2
Some say this means: Each person decides for himself what is right or wrong – Galatians 1:6-12 We can work to “earn” our salvation – Romans 3:20 We can’t “earn” salvation but must obey – True; but is this the complete thought here?
3
Meaning of “work out” Strong: “to work fully, that is, accomplish; by implication to finish” Bring to completion They had done well when Paul was present; now, he says, bring your salvation to completion
4
Paul was an example – 4:9 Note what Paul had done – Philippians 3:1-11 What must he now do? – Philippians 3:12-15 – Forget that which is behind Cannot rest on past accomplishments! – Press on to the goal
5
Paul was successful! 2 Timothy 4:6-8 Paul had “worked out” his salvation – He had “finished the course” Available to all who “love his appearing”
6
What Must I Do To Be Saved? Hear the gospel Hear the gospel (Rom. 10:17) Believe Jesus is Christ (Acts 8:37) Repent of your sins (Luke 13:3) Confess your faith in Christ (Mt. 10:32) Baptized for remission of sins (Acts 2:38) Walk by faith in newness of life (Rom. 6:4)
