Definition of Appositive An Appositive is a noun or pronoun placed after another noun or pronoun to identify, rename, or explain the preceding word. Ex: The basketball player, Shawn Bradley, is one of the tallest in the NBA. Ex: The director, Paris Cart-man, is horrible at making movies. Ex: We stopped at the capital of Virginia, Richmond.

Definition of Appositive Phrase An Appositive Phrase is an appositive with modifiers Ex: Shawn Bradley, the basketball player, is one of the tallest in the NBA. Ex: Paris Cart-man, the director, is horrible at making movies. Shawn Bradley The Basketball Player

Where Appositives go in a sentence They name a noun so they can usually be anywhere in a sentence. Appositives are always separated by comma's EX: The insect, the cockroach, is crawling across the kitchen.
