FOSSILS

Geologic Time Know this - A fossil is the naturally preserved remains or traces of animals or plants that lived in the geologic past. There are two main types of fossils; body and trace Know this - Body fossils include the remains of organisms that were once living Know this -Trace fossils are the signs that organisms were present (i.e. footprints, tracks, trails, and burrows Know this – Superposition is a basic law of geology that states that in any undisturbed sequence of rocks deposited in layers, the youngest layer is on top and the oldest on bottom, each layer being younger than the one beneath it and older than the one above it. Click the link below. This will open Discovery Education. Your login is the same as your normal computer however you will add the following after your name @ccsk12.net then use your normal password. After you have viewed the video, return to this presentation and go onto the next slide. What is Superposition

Copy the following question in your science notebook Geologic Time 1.What does fossils help us do? 1.How does superposition help us understand the age of rocks? 2.What would explain why fossils of marine organism have been found at tops of mountains? 3.Explain how the same types of animal and plant fossils have been discovered on different continents located thousands of mile apart. Go onto the next slide

Click on the link below and view the presentation to help you answer the questions. After you have completed the presentation and have answered the questions, return this presentation and go onto the next slide. Geologic Time

Past Lives Copy the following question in your science notebook 1.What information can the fossil of a tree trunk provide scientist? 2.What can be inferred by studying the fossil of a dinosaur nest and comparing it to modern day nesting animals? 3.When many individual fossils of the same type of animal are discovered in one place, what can scientist infer? Go onto the next slide

Past Lives Click on the link below and view the presentation to help you answer the questions. After you have completed the presentation and have answered the questions, return this presentation and go onto the next slide. Past Lives
