What are these? What do they communicate?

Road Signs ● Road signs indicate that a driver should be cautious. ● They should be on alert; something about the road up ahead is different. ● How are transitions like road signs? o Transitions, like road signs, signal to the reader the kind of information coming. o Writers need to prepare their readers for a shift in ideas.

● Words or phrases that act like bridges between ideas. ● They keep the reader from getting lost and confused. ● They are most often found at the beginning of sentences. ● For Example: o Meanwhile, suddenly, next, by now, lastly. What are transitions?

● A smooth flow of writing is achieved when writers select transitions intentionally. ● Just as road signs are not randomly placed, transitions should not be randomly pulled from a list. ● Effective writers change-up the transitions they use to make their writing more interesting and to avoid repetition. ● The writer needs to determine how his/her ideas are related. ● The context of writing always determines which type of transition to use.
