So what are sunspots and are they always there? What do sunspots suggest about the sun? Plot sunspot data for a period of over 30 years and determine any patterns in sunspot activity.

SUNSPOTS are areas of cooler temperatures, cooler than the surrounding surface. This image shows sunspots in the infrared, a less energetic wavelength of light than the color blue.

SUNSPOTS Occur on a regular cycle, and indicate the twisting of the sun’s magnetic field. When the magnetic field twists violently, sometimes field lines break through the surface of the sun causing sunspots. Field lines are “pent-up” energy and can break, releasing energy like bullets into the solar system. This energy is harmful to cellular life and electronics.
