Protestant Reformation in England  The Protestant Reformation soon began to spread out of Germany and into England  The English government however gave its full support to the Catholic Church even locking up and killing Protestants

King Henry Cont.  Henry was furious, he declared the Catholic Church illegal in England, he seized church lands, confiscated church possessions, and created the Church of England or the Anglican Church  The Anglican Church annulled his marriage but he started years of religion conflict within England and with other Catholic Countries.

King Henry’s Wives  Henry VIII would go on to marry five more times to have a total of six wives  Catherine of Aragon, divorced  Anne Boleyn, Beheaded  Jane Seymore, Died  Anne of Cleves, Divorced  Kathryn Howard, Beheaded  Katherine Parr, Widowed

Henry’s Successors  For all of Henry’s marriages he only managed to conceive one more daughter “Elizabeth” and a small sickly son named Edward VI  At Henry VIII death Edward became King at the age of 10. Edward was greatly influenced by Protestant reformers and during his short reign Catholics in England where persecuted ( hunted, imprisoned, hung, tortured, etc.)  At his death however his sister Mary took over the throne, Mary was a devoted Catholic

Henry’s Successors Cont.  Mary outlawed the Anglican church and restored the Catholic church in England  Mary persecuted the Protestants so harshly that she earned the nick name “ Bloody Mary”  Mary reigned only for a few years before she too died and the throne was passed to Elizabeth

Henry’s Successors Cont.  Elizabeth was a protestant but she didn’t believe in the religious persecution which had proceeded her instead she was tolerant of both Protestant and Catholic faiths  Under Elizabeth’s skillful rule England becomes a strong Protestant country while escaping violence and blood shed  Elizabeth is remembered as one of England’s greatest rules

Henry’s Successors Cont.  Elizabeth will leave no heir however because she never married  If she had married she would have to have given control of England to her husband and she was not willing to do that
