Japan had taken over Vietnam. Following the war the nationalist of Vietnam fought against the French who had been involved with Vietnam since the mid 1800’s. This lead to the First Indochina War, the nationalists won. The Geneva Conference was called and it was here that the country of Vietnam was split in half. In North Vietnam resided the Vietcong while in the South was a western friendly regime.

In the mid-1950’s the French left Vietnam and almost immediately the United States stepped into their place. The United States helped South Vietnam establish a “democratic” government led by Ngo Dinh Diem. Meanwhile in North Vietnam the National Liberation Front (Vietcong) was making themselves known, killing around 4,000 government officials a year. In South Vietnam, Diem started to lose control of his regime and an order okayed by President John F. Kennedy allowed a group to assassinate Diem. Only two weeks later Kennedy would be assassinated too.
