Program Goal “to assist limited-resource audiences in acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and changed behavior necessary for nutritionally sound diets, and to contribute to their personal development and the improvement of the total family diet and nutritional well-being”

Program History 1968 - EFNEP was initiated by USDA. 1970 – Program funded with an appropriation of $30 million, under the Smith-Lever Act as 3(d) funding. 1977 - The Food and Agriculture Act 1977 included, “employment and training of professional and paraprofessional aides to engage in direct nutrition education of low-income families and in other appropriate nutrition education programs” 1981 - The Agriculture and Food Act 1981 added, “To the maximum extent practicable, such program aides shall be hired from the indigenous target population…”

Approach Focus on low-income families, with an emphasis on parents and other adult caregivers who have primary responsibility for feeding young children, pregnant teens, youth, and children. County Extension Family and Consumer Science professionals supervise paraprofessionals

Approach Delivery methods: – Direct teaching in groups through a series of lessons – Reinforcement of teaching by use of mail, Internet, and telephone; mass media efforts – Development and training of volunteers to assist with direct teaching of adults and youth Four core content areas: – Diet quality and physical activity – Food resource management – Food safety – Food security

Includes Florida A& M University Over 12,000 Floridians participate each year. Adults complete at least six classes and youth complete at least five classes and five hours of education.

UF/IFAS Extension Morrill Act of 1862 – Established land grant universities Morrill Act of 1890 – Historically Black colleges and universities Smith Lever Act of 1914 – Started federal funding of Cooperative Extension

What is Cooperative Extension? Partnership among Federal, State, and Local agencies: – Federal: USDA-NIFA – State: Land-grant Universities (e.g., UF) – Local: County Extension Services

Extension’s Mission and Vision Mission: “ UF/IFAS Extension partners with communities to provide quality, relevant education and research-based expertise to foster healthy people, a healthy environment, and a healthy economy.” Vision: “UF/IFAS Extension is the resource that helps educate Floridians to solve problems related to agriculture, horticulture, natural resources, the environment, energy, youth, families, and communities.” 12
