If a client or a stylist suffers an electric shock you must not touch the client or stylist, turn off the electric and contact the first aid straight away. All accident must be reported in the accident book.

Research Task: 9 Continued Health and Safety Legislations: My responsibilities under the health and safety at work act are: To keep myself and anyone I come into contact with safe. The two pieces of information which a salon employer should provide you with are: The salons health and safety policy (verbal or written) and a job description. The following need to be included in the salons health and safety policy: The person responsible if an accident occurs. The person responsible in the event of a fire.

Research Task: 9 (continued) Legislations which affect salons: Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations 1989 (RIDDOR). Under this law your salon must report any accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences that may happen at work in the salon. The manual handling operations regulations 1992. All at work must prevent the risks from lifting and handling objects.

Research Task: 10 Fire Extinguishers: Water fire extinguishers are used on ordinary combustible, type A fires. Fires in paper, cloth, wood, rubber, and many plastics require a water type extinguisher labelled A. Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are used on flammable liquid type B fires. Fires in oils, gasoline, some paints, lacquers, grease, solvents, and other flammable liquids require an extinguisher labelled B. Foam fire extinguishers are used on electrical equipment type C fires. Fires in wiring, fuse boxes, energized electrical equipment, computers, and other electrical sources require an extinguisher labelled C. Powder fire extinguishers are used on ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, or electrical equipment, type A, B and C. Multi-purpose dry chemical is suitable for use on class A, B, and C.

Research Task: 10 (Continued) Lifting and Handling: If you see an object on the floor you would: Find out what's in it & if its heavy. Tell someone. If its not to heavy pick it up and move it. If it is to heavy ask someone else to move it. Check what's in it before you move it. Don’t just ignore it. Don’t bend your back. Don’t stretch. Bend your knees. Take some of its contents out if its to heavy. Don’t run with it.

Research Task 11: Emergency Services The emergency services include : police, fire people, ambulance. When calling emergency services the rules to follow are: Tell the client what they need to do. Ask for help if its needed from someone in the salon. Keep the client calm. Speak clearly and calmly on the phone. Don’t run round. Follow correct instructions. Ask for service. Give your name and address. Make others aware of the situation. Report it in the accident book.
