OPEN AND CLOSED SKILLS
7
What is an open skill? An open skill is one where your movements vary depending on what is going on around you. It is influenced by other factors other than yourself. It is your environment, weather, team mates, crowd, opponents etc.
8
Open Skills For example a pass during a netball game is influenced by people around you, team mates, opponents etc. A shot played in tennis is determined by the position of your opponent on the court where you are etc.
9
A Closed Skill? A closed skill is one which is not affected by anything. It can be repeated exactly the same each time. It is self paced and is not determined by the environment. Eg, a forward roll.
10
Closed Skills Self paced. You decide when to start and finish the skill. For example a forward roll. Or A set shot in basketball

Open or Closed Sailing. A shot in darts A shot in a netball game
100m race Conversion in rugby Think???

Open and closed continuum
Some skills are both open and closed. We use a continuous scale to place these skills. Eg, taking a penalty in football is a closed skill. However, you are still controlled by the referees whistle. This is a closed skill in an open situation. Can you think of any more?

A golfer A Windsurfer
