Brown & Day, 1984 Connect[ing] major themes into concise statements that capture the purpose of a reading for the reader. Block & Pressley, 2003 A good summary is : A short statement that links the main points of a text into a coherent whole.

20 Macro-rules 1.Delete unnecessary material 2.Delete redundancies 3.Generalise – For example, “cats, dogs, fish, guinea pigs” become “pets” 4.Integration For example, “Open ‘File’, open ‘Save as’, enter document name, click ‘Save’ icon” becomes ‘Save file’. 5.Select a paragraph topic sentence 6.If no topic sentence exists, invent your own!
