Liveability
2
Is Melbourne a liveable city? Why? Why not?
3
What about other cities? In your groups, share any experiences you have about living in another city in Australia or elsewhere in the world. Was this other place more or less liveable than Melbourne? Why?

7
What about “un-liveable” cities? EIU Ranking 2012 Why do you think these cities have scored so poorly?
8
What factors make a city “liveable”?
9
What the surveys look for: EIU: Financial focus: availability of goods & services, low risk, infrastructure… NOT – climate or cost of living Mercer: General wellbeing: safety, hygiene, education, health care, culture & the environment… Monocle: Safety, public transport, tolerance, environment, urban design, medical care…

Diamond Ranking
12
In pairs… Agree upon the nine factors which you think are the most important in determining how liveable your city is. If you think of a factor which is not listed, write it on a sticky-note. Arrange the factors in order of importance, using the diamond ranking tool.
13
When your pair is finished… You will be joined up with two other pairs. Look at how each pair has ranked their factors. Explain/justify to the group why you have chosen your arrangement. As a group, try to achieve consensus about the best way to rank the factors
14
Questions: Was there much disagreement about which were the most important factors, and how to rank them? (pairs, groups) Did you manage to resolve any disagreements (achieve consensus)? How did you do this? (pairs, groups) How might liveability be different for different people/different times?
