Problems A nations problems can drive nationalism, promote xenophobia. “Us” V. “Them” Germany will deal with this. Unemployment, destroyed economy, a shamed nation will lead to the rise of nationalism. Romantic promises of the “Good ‘ol Days!”

Literature of the 1920’s The war had been so brutal that new authors wrote books and created a philosophy that questioned accepted ideas about reason People became disillusioned with religion and the prospects of the future Existentialism was born-”no meaning to life, each person creates his or her own meaning in life through choices made and actions taken”

Revolution in Art Surrealism-”an artform that sought to link dreams with real life Jazz-Developed primarily by African Americans in New Orleans, Chicago, and Memphis.

Economic Depression After World War 1, Europe was financially devastated by the war. The value of money in Germany was worthless(See page 471) However, in the United States, the 1920’s saw a rise in new freedoms for women and EVERYONE had money! Known as the “Roaring 20’s” The Economy will also improve in Germany in the mid 1920’s pushing away themes of nationalism. Then… However, 1929 would see the collapse of the American economy and usher in a period of time known as the “Great Depression” Depression is an economic cycle

Government New democracies rose in Europe following World War 1; old monarchies and empires were gone and a new era where democracy might take root emerged Political Parties emerged throughout these countries, LOTS OF THEM!
