Spectroscopy and Star Fingerprints LT: To understand how a spectral lines can identify elements in a star. Terms: Spectroscopy – branch of science that studies the spectrum released when matter releases radiation Spectroscope – instrument used to observe visible light spectrum Emission Spectrum – all wavelength of light released from a body. Consists of lines or bands of colors Absorption Spectrum - made of a complete continuous spectrum with black lines missing where wavelength of light are absorbed

Partner A – Explain how spectroscopy works to partner B ( 1 min) Partner B – Explain in your words how spectroscopy works ( 1 min) Now - Everybody write three facts down about how spectroscopy works.
5
Spectroscopy and Star Fingerprints Each element has its own unique spectrum. Each element absorbs light of a particular frequency—a particular color. Atoms will absorb the light at that color and produce the line. By comparing the absorption and emission spectrum- we can find out what stars are made from ADD TO WHAT YOU WROTE IN YOUR JOURNAL
