E SSENTIAL Q UESTION : H OW IS MATTER MEASURED ? Chapter 4 Lesson 2

My Lab Report *Your chart should fill the entire page. ObjectTool used Mass or Volume?Measurement Results toy car _____ g block ________ cubic cm rock __________ mL ruler mass ruler volume beaker volume Experiment with this! Compare the mass of the 5 crayons with the rubber band by the group of the 5 single crayons. Is the mass……….the same, or is it different ?

Metric system: system of measurement based on multiples of 10 Mass Mass: amount of matter in an object. One tool to measure mass is a balance. Metric Units Conversion Chart see page 152

Volume Volume : amount of space that matter takes up How do we measure volume? Liquid: beaker or graduated cylinder Solid (block): length x width x height; answer in cubic cm Solid (rock): Place the rock in a graduated cylinder partly filled with water and measure the change in water volume.

Weight Weight: measure of the pull of gravity on an object. Are weight and mass the same? NO!!!! weight changes mass stays the same
