1 The Chemical Elements The periodic table organizes elements into:
Groups or Families that have similar properties

2 Periodic Table Organization
Groups: Vertical Columns: There are 18 groups/Families Periods: Horizontal Rows There are 7 periods Label the groups and periods on your periodic table.

3

4 Periodic Table Organization
The periodic table is divided into 3 main sections: The Representative Elements (A groups) The Transition Elements (B groups) The Inner Transition Elements Label these sections on your periodic tables.

5

6 Group Numbers and Family Names Representative Elements: Write these names in your note packet on page 20 IA Alkali Metal Family IIA Alkaline Earth Metal Family IIIA Aluminum Family IVA Carbon Family VA Nitrogen Family VIA Chalkogen family VIIA Halogen Family VIIIA Noble Gas Family

7 The Transition element families (B groups) do not have names like the Representative elements do. We just use the group numbers.

8 Inner Transition Elements – Label These on your periodic tables!
Period 6 atomic #s Lanthanides Period 7 atomic #s 89 – 103 Actinides

9

10 4 General Classes of Elements

11 4 General Classes of Elements Notes on page 21
1. Metals

12 Characteristics High Luster Solid at Room Temperature (most)
High Tensile Strength Malleable and Ductile Good Electrical Conductors Form Highly Colored Compounds

13 Gem Stones

14 List examples of metals from your periodic table!

15 Nonmetals

16 Characteristics Most are Gases at Room Temperature Solids are Brittle
Poor Conductors of Heat and Electricity Good Insulators Properties vary Across and Down Table

17 List examples of nonmetals from your periodic table!

18 Metalloids

19 Characteristics Solids at room temperature
Less malleable than metals but less brittle than nonmetals Less conductive than metals but more conductive than nonmetals.(Called Semi – conductors)

20 List examples of metalloids from your periodic table!

21 Noble Gases

22 Characteristics Nonreactive Gases at Room Temperature

23 List the 6 noble gases from your periodic table!

24 Don’t Inhale Helium
