GMMP QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODOLOGY By Dumisani Gandhi Assistant Director: Media Research and Policy

Quantitative & Qualitative research Quantitative – numerical, e.g. 10 sources in a story; 10 women sources and 2 male sources, i.e., number of women and men in world’s news Qualitative – more nuanced; in depth & reflective. How are the 10 women portrayed? Negatively? Positively? Looking for prototype/archetype. To get a more complete picture of news content and the messages it contains, we need to analyse the quality of the coverage.

What are we looking out for? Representation of women and men! Portrayal of women and men! The different ways in which men and women make the news! The roles women and men play! Who reports the news? Does it matter? What are gender stereotypes? What is gender aware reporting? What is gender blind reporting?
