Tools for Planning a Healthful Diet
Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) Set of nutrient reference values. Recommended Dietary Allowances(RDAs) Planning tools that suggest levels of nutrient intake to meet needs. Estimated Average Requirement(EAR) Nutrient recommendation Adequate Intake(AI) Research for nutrients Upper Tolerable Intake Level(UL) Maximum level at which a nutrient is unlikely to cause harm.

Tells you how you should be eating and at every meal. Calorie count for age and weight and physical activity. Servings sizes

Dietary Guidelines for Americans
Aim for Fitness Healthy weight and physically active everyday Build a Healthy Base Pyramid choose your foods. Variety of grains and fruits and veggies everyday. Food safe to eat Choose Sensibly Diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Moderate intake of sugars Alcohol in moderation

Using Food Recommendations and Guidelines
Food Diaries: Help keep you healthy and on track Helps you see your eating habits and what you may want to change. Analyze your diet: What are your nutrient needs? How many calories do you need? Plan using the pyramid

Activity Survey people at this school (teachers or students), ask them how well they follow the Dietary Guidelines. What is their favorite food to eat? What is their favorite healthy food to eat? Use a rating scale from 1-10. We will then as a class put this all on one big chart NEXT, we are going to plan a meal and cook using the food guide pyramid.
