The Conditional Mood
2
The Conditional- No Guarantees To express something that might happen, or would happen, if something else were to occur (if…then) you use the conditional mood (in English, it’s just would + verb) Often used in a sentence with the word si= if In French, to create the conditional, you use the future stem of the verb, and then add a set of endings
3
What was the future stem? In –er, and –ir regular verbs, the “future stem” just means the infinitive…like regarder or finir For –re regular verbs, the “future stem” just means drop the final e…like vendr or attendr There are some verbs with irregular future stems: Aller= irfaire= fervouloir=voudr Être= seravoir= aur
4
And those endings…? -Ais-ions -Ais-iez -Ait- aient You’ll being seeing these endings again in one kind of past tense
5
Examples So… J’irais= I would go Tu aimerais= You would like Il regarderait= He would watch Nous voudrions = We would want, We would like Vous seriez= you would be Ils finiraient= They would finish To make negative, put ne…pas around the verb
