Types of Chemical Reactions Notes
2
Synthesis Reaction 2 elements or compounds combine to make one compound. A + B ® AB Na + Cl2 ® NaCl Ca +O2 ® CaO
3
Decomposition Reactions
decompose = fall apart one compound (reactant) falls apart into two or more elements or compounds. AB A + B NaCl Na + Cl2
4
Single Replacement or Displacement
One element replaces another Reactants must be an element and a compound. Products will be a different element and a different compound. A + BC ® AC + B Na + SrCl2 ® Sr + NaCl
5
Double Replacement Two compounds replace each other. AB + CD AD + CB
ZnS + HCl ZnCl + H2S
6
Combustion CH4 + O2 CO2 + H2O
A hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water CH4 + O2 CO2 + H2O
7
We do (name the type of reaction)
HgO Hg + O2 Cl2 + NaBr NaCl + Br2 C3H O2 CO H2O CuCl2 + H2S CuS + HCl P + O2 P4O10
