oneone IN-4 Objective: To construct a catapult or series of catapults in order to test an experimental variable. Core Question: How is the experimental variable accounted for? Drill: 1. Look at your procedures. 2. In your Log Book create a list of materials that you will need for construction.
2
oneone IN-4 Procedure Checklist 1.Be specific. 2.Start each step with an action verb. 3.Include diagrams when necessary. 4.Include 1 main idea per step. 5.Stay on topic. 6.Number steps. 7.Steps should be logically ordered. 8.No personal pronouns should be used.
3
oneone IN-4 Sample Procedures 1.Cut the top part of the juice carton off so that each of the 4 walls is 19 cm high. See Figure 1. 2.Cut downward along each front edge 15 cm and fold the flap down. 3.Remove this piece by cutting horizontally along the fold of the flap. 4.Place a mark on the short surface of the carton centered about 4.7 cm from each side and about 2 cm from the bottom. 5.Use a nail or scissors to punch a hole about 0.5 cm in diameter at the mark on the bottom of the carton.
4
oneone IN-4 Sample Procedures 6.Place a mark on each side of the carton centered from front to back 14 cm up. 7.Place a mark on each side of the carton 4cm from the back and 4 cm up. 8.Using a sharp pencil, punch holes on each mark. 9.Insert a pencil through each set of parallel holes in the sides of the carton connecting the sides so that an equal amount extends outward from each side. The top pencil is the fulcrum bar. The bottom pencil is the tension enhancer. 10.Cut a 2 cm strip off the top of each side leaving a 2 cm upward extension on the front of the carton.
5
oneone IN-4 Sample Procedures 11. Fold this extension downward so that it lies horizontally. (It should be even with the sides.) 12. Tape the top flap down. 13.Insert a rubber band through the front hole, so that only a small loop hangs out. 14. Slide a craft stick through the hole, and pull the rubber band tight from the inside. 15. Thread the free end of the rubber band through the hole in the end of the spoon, and loop it over the end. 16. Pull the rubber band around both of the pencils so that it faces the inside of the container. You may need to temporarily slide the pencils out to allow the spoon to pass.
6
oneone IN-4 Group Work REVISE YOUR PROCEDURES AND START CONSTRUCTION. Remember to account for your experimental variable.
7
oneone IN-4 HOMEWORK Work on prototypes if necessary.
