LISTSERV at Fort Lewis College

What is “LISTSERV”? LISTSERV® is a system that makes it possible to create, manage and control electronic "mailing lists" on your corporate network or on the Internet. Different from a Distribution List in Outlook. – Folks can subscribe to or remove themselves from a listserv, but have less control if someone has them on a Distribution List.

Distribution lists in Outlook You add people to your list. Choose that list from Contacts. (Other people can’t “join” or “subscribe” to your distribution list.) Scroll up to see Contacts.

Distribution lists, continued All the people you added to your distribution list will be added to this email. They may not have a similar list to put you on.

LISTSERV lists in Outlook Denoted by “-L” like FLC-ADMINCOUNCIL-L or FLC-ANNOUNCE-L You would need to know the name of the listserv you belong to, or want to send to. Use the Search box at the To option of the new email message.

LISTSERV lists in Outlook, cont’d. I know I belong to “flc- ClientServices-l”. I can send an email to all members of that LISTSERV without having to create my own Distribution List. People can subscribe or drop, and I am not managing who is in or out.

OFFICIAL – FACULTY – ANNOUNCE FLC-OFFICIAL-L includes all employees. This Listserv is moderated, meaning, someone reviews content for standards, then sends it. FLC-FACULTY-L includes all Faculty, fulltime and adjunct. This Listserv is moderated, meaning, someone reviews content for standards, then sends it. (Same for STUDENT) You can choose to be on FLC-ANNOUNCE-L

Logging into LISTSERV If you are on-campus, type “listserv” in the address bar of your browser window.

Logging into LISTSERV, cont’d. Enter your FLC email address as the username. If you have changed your network password, you will need to change it here, as well.

Logged in, now what? Top menu bar for: List Management – lists that you “own” Subscriber’s Corner – lists you are “subscribed to” Email Lists – view all the existing lists

List Management My dashboard shows only one list I am the “owner” of, FLC- MOODLE-L. View subscribers or configure list title and description.

Subscriber’s Corner Lists all the lists I am subscribed to. – I chose FLC- ANNOUNCE-L (we’ll see how, later) – Other people added me to their lists, manually or through an automated process: OFFICIAL, FACULTYEXEMPT, STAFFEXEMPT, IT, CLIENTSERVICES, etc.
