2 Objectives: After reading The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, students will Read about a modern-day judge who has handed-out many punishments and compare his punishments to the type ordered in The Scarlet Letter. Record a podcast, expressing their opinions about the appropriateness of this type of punishment in today’s society.

4 Background: Judge Ted Poe, a former Texas judge, garnered national media attention for his “Poetic Justice” in sentencing criminals. Among his innovative punishments, Poe ordered: thieves to carry signs in front of stores from which they stole required men who abused their wives to publicly apologize on the steps of Houston’s City Hall commanded sex offenders to place warning signs on their home after serving jail time directed murderers to hang a photo of their victims in their prison cells as a daily reminder of their crimes.

5 Process: 1.Students create a podcast, using Audacity, to express their opinions related to the types of punishment described in the Hawthorne novel and in the Judge Poe letter. 2.Students upload their completed podcasts to Podbean (http://www.podbean.com) and include their podcasts in a multimedia presentation that compares Hawthorne’s version of justice to Judge Poe’s interpretation.http://www.podbean.com Sample Podcast

6 Wrap Up: Demonstrated one use of podcasting in the classroom A great way to archive student learning and progress in the form of an audio portfolio. An opportunity for students to contribute meaningful work to the ever expanding World Wide Web
