2 The Origins and Evolution of Terrorism
Aim: What is the definition of terrorism?

3 Questions… Events of 9/11 forced Americans to consider important questions in a context shaped by the deaths of thousands of Americans. What are the motivations for terrorism? Why were we attacked? How should we respond?

4 Daily Topics I. Historical origins and purposes of terrorism.
II. Context and content of bin Laden’s call to violence against the US. III. What are the potential threats against the US? How should we respond?

5 Terrorism Intro… Today the word terrorism conjures up images of 9-11, and anger in the middle east. Terrorism however, is neither new nor confined to middle east Islamic extremism. Throughout history terrorist have come from many places with many motivations. States, groups seeking freedom, and those seeking an end of colonial rule have all used terror to advance their goals.

6 I. Modern Terror After WWII, terrorism spread as a political instrument of revolutionaries. (Israel, Kenya, Algeria) However it was the 1972 Olympics in Munich that shaped out current view of terrorists.

9 II. State Sponsored Terror
Governments around the world took notice of the exposure and power small numbers of people could gain from terrorism. 1979-terrorists backed by the Iranian govt. seized 52 Americans in Tehran.The world’s attention was focused on Tehran for more than a year. Throughout the 80’s states such as Iran, North Korea, and Libya sponsored terrorism as a way of striking back at more powerful states.

11 III. Religiously Motivated Terrorism
While state sponsored terrorism made it increasingly deadly, another worrying trend has emerged. In 1980 the US State Departments list of international terrorist groups included only one group with religious affiliation. By 2003 more than half of them had religious affiliation. A world gone wrong…

14 Activity Read Aloud. As we read:
1. UNDERLINE: the standards the international community has established for when force may be used. 2. UNDERLINE the regulations established by the Geneva convention. UNDERLINE the definition of “proportionality.” WHAT IS OUR DEFINITION OF TERRORISM?

15 Terrorism is defined by the US Department of Defense as "the unlawful use of -- or threatened use of -- force or violence against individuals or property to coerce or intimidate governments or societies, often to achieve political, religious, or ideological objectives."

16 Task In groups of the three read the first two case studies and, answer the questions. Be prepared to share whether or not you believe your group should be considered terrorists or revolutionaries (people fighting for freedom). Group Roles: 1. Reader (out loud) 2. Recorder 3. Presenter
