Scientific Notation is a way to abbreviate very large or very small numbers.

Scientific Notation Format: a number between 1 & 10 multiplied by 10 with an exponent.

The exponent can be positive, negative, or zero.

Numbers with positive exponents are large (anything greater than ten).

Numbers with negative exponents are small (anything less than one).

Numbers with zero as an exponent are between one and ten.

Examples:

4,300,000 is the expanded form. 4.3 x 10 6 is in scientific notation.

0.0000749 is the expanded form. 7.49 x 10 5 is in scientific notation.

2.645 x 10 8 is in scientific notation. 264,500,000 is the expanded form.

7.09 x 10 8 is in scientific notation. 0.0000000709 is the expanded form.

Your scientific calculator will use scientific notation for very large or very small numbers.

4.3 x 10 6 will be shown on your calculator as 4.3 E6

E stands for exponent.
