Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen. Today we are debating the resolution, “_____.” We on the affirmative team strongly support this resolution. We have ___ reasons: _____, _____, etc. Our first point is_____. (Reason + support) Our second point is _______. (Reason + support) …. In conclusion, we have talked about _____, ____, etc. For these reasons, we the ___ side strong believe that….

Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen. Today we are debating the resolution, “_____.” We on the negative team are strongly against this resolution. We have ___ reasons: _____, _____, etc. Our first point is_____. (Reason + support) Our second point is _______. (Reason + support) …. In conclusion, we have talked about _____, ____, etc. For these reasons, we the ___ side strong believe that….

 make it easy for debaters to refer to, help judges remember which part of the debate you are referring to  Signpost + reason + support

ExamplesStatisticsExpert OpinionExplanations For example… For instance… Let me give an example… When I…my… 25% of all college students…. 1 in 4 college students… 1 out of 4 college students… ¼ of all college students… According to… A recent article in…. States that… _____, the famous (etc.) _____ stated that… To quote _____, “____” If we don’t ___, _____ If we didn’t ____, ___ wouldn’t… ______ are/aren’t ____, so… Because _____, _____.

Watching movies at home is better than watching movies in the movie theater. 1. Point 1 1. Reason 2. Support 2. Point 2 1. Reason 2. Support

The US should disband the use of the electoral college in voting for the president. Negative side… Our first point is that the electoral college enhances the status of minority interests. This is so because minorities in a State may make the difference between winning all of that State's electoral votes or not. In a direct election, if 55% of voters are pro-choice no candidate needs to worry about the other 45% in the minority since he can win without them. However, in the Electoral College system even if the nation at large is 55% for an issue the one state a candidate may need to win could be 55% against it. Therefore candidates must at least acknowledge the concerns of the minority rather than run roughshod over them

 Guidelines for use of Examples:  Do not use them alone to support an important claim  Examples are useful in clarifying, reinforcing, or personalizing ideas  Ethical use demands that you consider the source, age, and representativeness of the example  Tips for effective use of statistics:  Combine statistics with examples  Don’t use too many at a time  Identify the source of the statistics  Translate your statistics  Round off your statistics  Use visual aids  Guidelines for the use of testimony:  Quote accurately  Paraphrase fairly  Use qualified sources  Use reluctant testimony  Always identify the source and the source’s credentials

 The other team’s point is  Not true (untrue, false)  Not always true  Not necessarily true  Not Important  Not relevant (irrelevant to the topic, misses the point, etc.)  Not significant (the difference is not significant/ doesn’t matter, too small)  Easy to solve (easy to fix, can be fixed/remedied by…)  Signpost – they mentioned, their ____ point was….  Rephrase – they said, claimed, stated…  Negation – however, this is not true, not important, etc.  Why – because… it’s not relevant, significant, etc.  Rationale…

 sometimes it is also true that…  There is no correlation between..  The difference is too small to be important…  To solve the problem, do X instead of Y.  The reason that…  Just because X is true doesn’t mean Y is true.

 we shouldn’t have school events on Saturdays so that…  Students can spend more time with family  Schools will save cost on heating, electricity, salaries  Students will have more free time to pursue hobbies  Teachers will have time to prepare lessons

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have talked about ______, ______, and _____, had have clearly stated ______. For these reasons we beg to propose. Example:  a small company is better to work for than a large company.  Opportunity, salary, flexibility.

 read a newspaper article or watch a video on a current event  Write a 1-2 page paper (double spaced, 12 point font) stating…  Which article, news report, video, etc. you watched  What issue is being debated  Brainstorm what reason and support each side could use to support their cause
