HOME BUILDING PART 1 Floor Framing

Floor Frame  Now that you have a foundation, it’s time to build on it.  This type of construction is for stem-wall foundations. Slab on grade foundations would only use this floor construction for multiple stories.  Every piece of wood has a name and a job.

Parts of a Floor Frame- Pier Block  A pier block or footing transfers weight to the ground and carries the load of the floor above. Part of the support system.

Parts of a Floor Frame- Post  The post connects to the pier block and holds up the girder above. This is part of the support system of the floor.

Parts of a Floor Frame- Girder  A large principal beam of steel, wood, or a combination of these, used to support other structural members at isolated points along its length. Girder

Facts About Building-Nails  A general-purpose, headed nail with a diamond-shaped point used where appearance is not important, as in framing.  Length:3 1/2” Toe Nail/End Nail16d (16 Penny) Common Joists and blocks Rim joists blocks

Parts of a Floor Frame- Sill Plate  A horizontal framing member installed on a structures foundation.  Lowest framing member.  Bolts to the foundation. Sill/Mud Sill/Sole Plate

Parts of a Floor Frame- Rim Joist  Perimeter (Rim) joist for a wood floor framing system.  Joist: A piece of lumber two or four inches thick and six or more inches wide, used horizontally as a support for a ceiling or floor. Also, such a support made from steel, aluminum, or other material. Rim Joist

Parts of a Floor Frame- Joist  A piece of lumber two or four inches thick and six or more inches wide, used horizontally as a support for a ceiling or floor. Also, such a support made from steel, aluminum, or other material.  2. Parallel beams of lumber or steel used to support floor and ceiling systems. Joist

Parts of a Floor Frame- Blocking  piece of wood nailed between joists to stiffen a floor. Blocking

Facts About Building-Lumber 2”x6”, 2”x8”, 2’x10” Doug-Fir Glue laminated, I-Beams Lumber MillMan-made (engineered)

Parts of a Floor Frame- Sub-Floor/Sheathing  Structural wood panel, usually OSB or plywood, installed over floor joists.  7/8" tongue-and- groove board. Sheathing

Facts About Building-Sheathing PlywoodOSB (Oriented Strand Board)

Facts About Building-Sheathing  8d-10d common  8d- 2 ½”  10d- 3” NailsAdhesive  Gluing reduces squeaking and creaking  Adds up to 25% more strength

Facts About Building-Sheathing  Staggered  Ends centered on a joist SpacingNail Pattern  8”on edges (Not scaled for full 4’x8’ sheet)  12” in the field..................................... 8” 12”
