The nervous system is divided into the peripheral nervous system ( PNS ) and the central nervous system ( CNS ) THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

The PNS consists of sensory neurons running from stimulus receptors that inform the CNS of the stimuli motor neurons running from the CNS to the muscles and glands - called effectors - that take action. The CNS consists of the spinal cord brain

CNS: controls behavior & coordinates movement between/among all different parts of the body Brain protected by the skull, spinal cord protected by vertebrae/ spinal column but this does NOT mean they are safe from injuries

What is a reflex? it can occur without going through the brain to process. Is fight or flight response a reflex? Yes: according to who? No: according to who?

Frontal Lobe - reasoning, planning, parts of speech, movement, emotions, and problem solving Parietal Lobe - movement, orientation, recognition, perception of stimuli Occipital Lobe - visual processing Temporal Lobe - perception and recognition of auditory stimuli, memory, and speech 4 Lobes

HEMISPHERES Our brain has 2 hemispheres: a LEFT and a RIGHT. Our LEFT controls the RIGHT side of our body, and vice- versa.

Our Brain’s Main Structures 2 hemispheres, 4 lobes… Cerebellum "little brain", is similar to the cerebrum in that it has two hemispheres and has a highly folded surface or cortex. This structure is associated with regulation and coordination of movement, posture, and balance. Limbic System referred to as the "emotional brain", is found buried within the cerebrum. Like the cerebellum, evolutionarily the structure is rather old Brainstem vital life functions such as breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure Medulla, pons, midbrain
