4 Britain’s Trade Laws 1763 George Grenville – Prime Minister of Britain
Goal – Lower Britain’s debt Take action against smuggling in the colonies (When the colonists smuggle goods to avoid taxes, Britain loses money) 1767 Parliament authorized the writs of assistance Legal documents that allowed custom officers to enter any location and search for smuggled goods.

5 The Sugar Act 1764 GOAL- stop smuggling
Lowered tax on imported molasses Hoped to convince colonists to pay the tax Let officers seize goods from smugglers w/o going to court

6 The Stamp Act 1765 Placed a tax on all printed materials in the colonies All printed items must have a stamp from British officials Affected almost EVERYONE

7 The Quartering Act 1765 Forced the colonies to pay for housing British soldiers in taverns, inns, vacant buildings, and barns. Colonists were expected to provide food and drinks
