4 Objectives  Students learn about social work and social problems in the context of Sub-Saharan African societies and their social development.  Students get some practical and theoretical understanding for working in the international development field.

5 Study methods  This course will include class instruction, group work/discussion sessions for 16 hours.  There will be three articles/on-line readings assigned for the students.  Readings will amount to 20 hours of work.  Essay (besides the lectures the reading materials are also reflected in the essay) amounts up to 90 hours of work.  Assessment: Scaled 0-5  1. attendance in the lecture seminar  2. essay, 7-8 pages (in English or in Finnish) based on lectures and reading material

6 What is an essay?  An essay is a piece of writing on a particular topic or theme.  The topic/title of an essay can be decided by the writer.  Conventionally the objective of an essay is often to survey the literature or other material in a particular field. Examining the literature may also be critical.  A well written reviewing essay consists at least  An introduction where you set up your 'research question‘.  Review of the lectures and reading material  You may use also other literature on the topic/the academic discussion of the topic  Conclusions

7 When preparing an essay you are expected  to clearly define and limit the theme  an essay should be approximately 7-8 pages long  be aware that essay should have a clear and coherent structure  it should be written in proper academic language  references should be marked in the text  on the last page there should be a list of references

8 Layout of an essay 1. On the cover page of your essay you should mark:  the title of the essay  name of the author  name and code of the course  date 2. Use font size 12 and spacing 1,5 3. Paragraphs are separated with one empty space 4. Essays should contain subtitles/headings, but they do not need to be numbered. Apt subtitles are an efficient way to structure the presentation. 5. On the last page there should be a List of References including all the references you have used (lectures, articles, books, statistics, on-line material etc, also unpublished material and lectures should be listed)
