2 Organization Introduction: Hook, Thesis, Subtopics Body Paragraphs: Subtopics. Each subtopic must include at least 1 source. -Remember, the Subtopics: Define, Describe, Evaluate. -To add paragraphs your essay, use smaller topics within your subtopics. Conclusion: restate thesis and subtopics with So What?.

3 Analyzing Source When you cite a source make sure you explain why you are using it and how it is important to your thesis. This involves three steps: setting up the source, citing the source analyzing the source.

4 Setting Up Sources (Citation Sandwich) Step 1 Explain (Topic Sentence) the context for using the source. Step 2: Cite (Quote, Statistic, Fact) the source. Step 3: Analyze (Explain how the citation ties to your thesis) how it relates to your thesis.

5 Analyzing the Source Example Example: (Topic Sentnece): “In 1952 Jonas Salk developed a vaccine to eradicate the Polio Virus. (Citing the Source): When Salk won the Nobel Prize in science five years later, he said ‘this award goes to the children’ (Nobel Foundation). (Analyzing how your source relates to your thesis): Because of Salk’s accomplishment, Polio saved the lives of millions of children.

6 Transitions Remember to have clear transitions between subtopics. We all the know the reader is an idiot. Be kind and guide him throughout your essay.

7 Transitions Example End of Paragraph 1: Since Polio became a world wide epidemic affecting children, the world science community worked feverishly to find a cure. Beginning of Paragraph 2: In response to the world wide Polio epidemic, Dr. Jonas Salk gathered together a group of scientists at the University of Pittsburgh to develop a cure.

8 In-Text Citations You should include 5 in-text citations in your essay. All of your in-text citations must be referenced in your Works Cited Page!

9 How do you do an In-Text Citation? -Always put it at the end of a sentence in parenthesis. The period goes after the citation. EX: Human beings have been described as "symbol-using animals" (Burke, 3).

10 Common Types of In-Text Citations. Website (cite the simple URL): EX: Abraham Lincoln's birthplace was designated as a National Historical Site in 1959 (www.nps.gov). CD ROM (Title and Date of Publication): EX: Heart Disease is the number one ailment in America (Encarta, 2007). Book with Author (Last name and Page number): EX: The tendency to come to terms with difficult experiences is referred to as a "purification process." " (Sennett 11). Work with no author (List the Organization/Company): EX: Several critics of the concept of the transparent society ask if a large society would be able to handle the complete loss of privacy ("Surveillance Society"). Interview (List the person interviewed and date): According to Johnson “sleep deprivation has ruined my life” (Johnson, Jan 12, 2006).

12 Using MLA Format Make sure to have a header using your last name and page number on each page. Heading goes on left side of first page with name, teacher’s name, class, and date. Works Cited in alphabetical order using hanging format.
