1. Welcome to Foundation Stage Curriculum evening 15 th September 2015

2. Tonight’s Meeting To help you to understand the curriculum that your child will be covering whilst in Foundation. To understand how we teach in order to cover the requirements of the curriculum. To identify the key ways in which you can help your child at home and in school.

4. What is the Early Years Foundation Stage? The Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S.) is the stage of education for children from birth to the end of the Foundation year. It is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning.

5. The E.Y.F.S. is based on 4 themes. 1A Unique Child 2Positive Relationships 3Enabling Environments 4Learning and Development

6. W ithin the theme of Learning and Development there are seven areas. All areas are connected to one another and are equally important. Prime Areas 1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development 2. Communication and Language 3.Physical Development Specific Areas 1. Mathematics 2.Understanding of the World 3.Expressive arts and Design 4.Literacy

7. Personal, Social and Emotional Development The children will be learning to: become self-confident; take an interest in things; know what their own needs are; dress and undress independently; become independent; tell the difference between right and wrong.

8. Communication, Language and Literacy The children will be learning to: talk confidently and clearly enjoy listening to stories, songs and poems hear and say sounds, and link them to the alphabet read and write familiar words

9. Physical Development The children will be learning to: move confidently; control their body; handle equipment. learn to use a pencil effectively

10. Mathematical The children will be learning to: develop an understanding of maths through stories, songs, games and imaginative play become comfortable with numbers and with ideas such as 'heavier than' or 'bigger’ be aware of shapes and space.

11. Understanding of the World The children will explore: find out about the world around them, asking questions about it build with different materials, know about everyday technology and learn what it is used for find out about past events in their lives and their families' lives find out about different cultures and beliefs.

12. Expressive Arts and Design The children will explore: colours and shapes; making things; role play; making music.

A typical day in Foundation. 8.30am Come in, find locker and self register. 8.30 -8.55 Choose activities before Register 9.00 – 9.10 Register and look at the visual timetable for the morning. 9.10 – 9.25 Carpet session (Literacy focused) 9.20- 11:00 Activities and teacher focused tasks 11:00-11:10 Tidy up 11.11 -11.35 Phonics lesson 11.45-1:00 Lunch 1:00-1:10 Register and look at the visual timetable for the afternoon and brain gym 1.00-1.15 Carpet session (Maths Focused) 1.15-2.40 Activities and teacher focused tasks 2.50-3.05 Tidy up and Milk/water Time /story 3.05-3.15 Coats/bags for home time /club time

15. The first few weeks We will find out what the children already know and can do and use this information to help us develop an individual learning programme for each child. Each child has their own book “Learning Journal” where we keep evidence of their learning and samples of work or photographs of what they have been doing. We value any contribution that you would like to make to this in helping us meet your child’s needs. You will be invited to discuss how your child has settled in and their progress so far at the parents evenings on 6 th and 7 th October.

16. Supporting your child at home You can play a key part in supporting your child’s learning and development by: Reading to your child each evening, looking at and talking about the pictures and discussing what happened in the story. Practicing their letters and sounds (pure sounds) by playing “I Spy”. Singing nursery rhymes (traditional and modern) and talking about rhyming words. Developing their fine manipulative skills by playing activities such as threading and play dough. Parent support and activity packs.

18. Other matters… There will be no PE until the summer Term All school letters go home on a Friday. Show and tell will begin 24 th Sept 2014, however I always encourage them to bring things in that they have made at home or found at home to share with class. Daisy’s Diary- will go home with star of the week, to be returned by Tuesday so it can be shared with the class.

19. Reading Challenge! 4 times a week for 10 weeks! The children will receive a reading badge red, green then gold! This can be books they have read to you or you have read to them! Please record in partnership book and I will make a note week! So… Read! Read! Read!
