FINDING SLOPE By Ms. Morgan
2
Students will be able to: Find the slope of a line on a coordinate plane.
3
Math Standard: 8.G.13 Determine the slope of a line from a graph and explain the meaning of slope a constant rate of change.
4
Do now: Using the graphing paper, create a coordinate plane. Graph the following points: Value of X Value of Y Pairs (X,Y) -40(-4;0) -21(-2;1) 02(0;2) 44(4;4)
5
How do we find the answer: Value of X Value of Y Pairs (X,Y) -40(-4;0) -21(-2;1) 02(0;2) 44(4;4)
6
New Concept: SLOPE Slope is the ratio of the vertical change to the horizontal change.
7
Types of SLOPES: POSITIVE (going up)NEGATIVE (going down)
8
Types of SLOPES cont.? ZERO SLOPE NO SLOPE
9
How do we find SLOPE? We find SLOPE by measuring RISE OVER RUN
10
How do we find SLOPE cont.? RISE = 2 RUN = 3 SLOPE = 2/3 THIS IS A POSITIVE SLOPE
11
How do we find SLOPE cont.? RISE = 3 RUN = -2 SLOPE = -3/2 THIS IS A NEGATIVE SLOPE
12
On your own: USE LOOSE LEAF PAPER FOR THESE THREE PROBLEMS. THEY WILL BE COLLECTED AND GRADED. PLEASE BE NEAT! Create a table and graph the following equations: Y= 2x - 1 Y= 3x – 4 Write down if it is a Positive or Negative SLOPE. VALUE OF X EQUATIONVALUE OF Y (X;Y) PAIR 0 1 2 3 4
