Chapter 4 – Lesson 2 We live out the 1 st Commandment. God stated the 1 st Commandment, “I am the Lord your God, you shall not have strange gods before me. God led the Israelites out of Egypt, and they agreed to his covenant that he would be their God and they would be his people. While on Mt. Sinai, the Israelites grew restless and made a gold idol to worship.

Chapter 4 – Lesson 2 Idolatry – Giving worship to a creature or thing instead of God. Atheism – The sin which rejects or denies God’s existence. The 1 st commandment directs us to believe in God and put him first in our lives. The Theological Virtues faith, hope, and charity (love)

Chapter 4 – Lesson 2 We live out the 2nd Commandment. God reveals that his name is sacred, or holy. “You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God in vain.” Yahweh – “I am who am.” We use God’s name only when necessary and with reverence, or honor, love, and respect. Sins against the 2 nd commandment include: blasphemy – a thought, word, or act that makes fun of or shows hatred for God, the Church, or sacred objects. perjury – the act of making a false oath. cursing – calling on God to do harm to someone.

Chapter 4 – Lesson 2 We live out the 3rd Commandment. God created everything in six days, and rested on the 7 th day. “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.” The day to rest is called the Sabbath. Catholics celebrate this day on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation, by attending Mass. At Mass we celebrate Jesus’ Paschal Mystery – his suffering, death, Resurrection, and Ascension. The Jews celebrate the Sabbath or Shabbat on Saturday. Their Sabbath begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday.
