What Is Instructional Technology? A “lot like herding cats…it can probably be done, but it won’t be easy.” (Christopher) So new, no definite answer Entwined with educational technology and instructional design

THE Instructional Technologist is “a person to analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate educational processes using appropriate technology.” (AECT) recognized by the cape, aka “Superman and Wonderwoman” (Christopher)

IT Issues for the Media Center Tech roles vary with job titles and descriptions Coordination of additional tech training Communication-Are we speaking the same language? Media role- more managerial, less information/instruction Increased tech time for media staff Cost for additional resources and personnel $ $ -training of teachers, students, self $ $ -troubleshooting availability/responsibility $ $ -budgeting additional hardware and software $ $ -adding clerical staff

Start w/curriculum, teaching strategies, then add tech Partnership with teachers, businesses, and district Train on reliable machines with real life issues and lesson plans Ensure tech access Employ students (STARS) (Morrison) Motivate by modeling Develop “help desk,” cheat sheets, handbooks Use Administrators as trainers- “follow the leader”

Add aides for clerical duties Promote LMS’s role Keep focus on learning, information, and books Network, Network, Network-people, information, and ideas Develop Tech Teams to create vision based on needs and curriculum to ensure training implementation to facilitate purchases to create support system of peer collaboration

Get involved with… Instructional Technology! Be familiar with research and trends Organize, publicize, teach, promote technology Involve district in planning and programs Integrate technology with other school plans Converse with colleagues regarding technology Promote best teaching practices Offer more instruction/practice for technophobic Promote online staff development Attend grade/subject meetings with suggestions

IT Personnel Go for IT; it might be fun. After all, a librarian by any other name will still be a librarian.
