Himalayas Run along India’s northern border Home to Mt. Everest

Gangetic Plain South of the Himalayas Stretches 1500 miles ½ of India’s population lives here

Deccan Most of the area is plateau, divided by hills and valleys Edges are defined by Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats

Ganges Begins in Southern slopes of Himalayas Hindus consider it sacred and call it “Mother River” It leaves rich silt in Gangetic Plain making it the farming heartland

Climate Types Himalayas have highland climates with snow and glaciers Near Pakistan is hot and dry year-round Farther south Tropical Climates and Steppe Monsoons are important to farmers If come too early or too late food production suffers

Resources Most of India’s people work in agriculture Cash crops= cashew nuts, cotton, spices, and sugarcane Gemstones are valuable export Teak-one of most valuable types of wood
