The students will analyze the impact of the railroads by identifying the positive and negative effects of railroads on the nation’s economy Warm-up Question: Read “Historical Spotlight” on page 253 and examine the picture on page 255 and answer the following: 1. Why do you think railroads became a part of American culture in the late 1800’s? 2. What mood about railroad travel does the picture on page 255 express?

Railroads Span Time and Space 1 st railroad during the 1830’s 1856-Railroads expanded to the Mississippi Transcontinental Railroad-May 10, 1869 Central Pacific employed Chinese immigrants Union Pacific employed Irish immigrants and Civil War veterans Identify the pay structure for different ethnic groups that toiled on the Railroad. Explain any difference in pay.
