Representing the converging computing and communications market, CompTIA has more than 9,000 corporate members in 63 countries, and thousands of individual professional members. Almost half a million individuals worldwide have earned CompTIA certifications. More information is available at www.comptia.org.www.comptia.org Using funding from the U.S. Department of Labor, CompTIA is developing and testing the IT Industry Apprenticeship System. For additional information about the apprenticeship system, refer to the working paper: The Role of Apprenticeship in the Development of the Information Technology Workforce: An Economic Perspective by John Aaron and Neill Hopkins. The reader is also encouraged to browse CompTIA’s Technical Career Compass (TCC) at tcc.comptia.org to find useful information regarding skills, certifications and knowledge standards for common IT occupations. About CompTIA

3 Introduction—IT Project Manager Version Apprenticeship is a powerful approach for developing a company’s IT workforce. To facilitate the use of apprenticeship within the IT industry, CompTIA is developing the Information Technology Industry Apprenticeship System (IIAS) to support the apprenticeship programs of IT employers. Under the CompTIA system IT employers can participate in the apprenticeship system by registering their programs with CompTIA. Registered IT employers are awarded the status of “registered on-the-job-learning provider organizations” signifying that the IT employer meets the quality standards for delivering structured on-the-job learning (OJL) to workers in one or more IT disciplines ranging from general IT work to highly specialized IT occupations. Workers who receive OJL at work and classroom instruction either inside or outside of work for the IT Project Management discipline can apply this training toward earning the industry-recognized credential---IT Project Management Journey Worker. This document is a guide for the IT employer to create and register an IT Project Management apprenticeship. Contact CompTIA for information on how to build apprenticeships in other IT occupations and disciplines.

4 IT Apprenticeship Builder ® Methodology CompTIA’s IT Apprenticeship Builder ® Methodology is a step-by-step approach to design, build, prepare and launch an IT apprenticeship using the tools available through CompTIA. Building and launching an IT apprenticeship is a process containing five phases. These phases are described below: Analyze- determine if an IT Apprenticeship is needed in your organization. Design- create an apprenticeship career path using information from 1) your own organization, 2) CompTIA’s Technical Career Compass, 3) relevant CompTIA certifications and 4) other available information from certifications and other source documents. Using this information, you create the design of an IT Apprenticeship that meets your objectives. Build- list the tasks requiring on-the-job learning and list the topics for related classroom instruction. This step also includes creating and submitting the documentation required to register the program with CompTIA U.S. Department of Labor standards. Prepare- engineer the necessary on-the-job learning tools into work processes and prepare relevant classroom instruction. This step also includes a site visit from CompTIA to review your strategy for delivering on-the-job learning and classroom instruction. In addition, this step includes registering apprentices at your organization. Execute- execute your plans for delivering on-the-job learning and related classroom instruction. This phase also includes monitoring and tracking the delivery of the program and the achievements earned by apprentices.
